Speak Greek Inspires Year 11 Students at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School

At Speak Greek, we are passionate about showing young people the power and joy of learning languages. Today, we had the privilege of visiting Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Blackburn, where we delivered a lively and interactive presentation to more than 100 Year 11 students.

Promoting Language Learning

Our aim was to encourage students to consider foreign languages for their GCSE and A Level studies. We began by exploring why learning languages matters from opening doors to global opportunities, to boosting brainpower, to connecting with cultures in meaningful ways.

Sharing Our Journeys

Konstantina and Iraklis shared their own language journeys, offering personal insights into how languages have shaped their education, careers, and lives. Their stories helped students see that language learning is not only achievable, but also deeply rewarding.

Breaking Myths

We challenged some of the most common myths about language learning, such as “languages are too difficult”, “everyone speaks English” or 'Languages aren't useful'. By breaking down these misconceptions, we showed students that languages are accessible, practical, and fun.

Spotlight on Greek

We then turned the spotlight on the Greek language, highlighting its rich heritage and its lasting influence on English. Students were surprised to discover how many everyday English words have Greek roots.

Interactive Activity

To bring the session to life, students took part in a pronunciation challenge. They tried saying Greek‑origin words that exist in English such as elephant, magnet, carrot, rhino, bomb, and geography. The activity sparked laughter, curiosity, and a new appreciation for the links between languages.

Our Thanks

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mrs SL Broom, Head of Languages Faculty, for inviting us and for her warm welcome. It was a pleasure to collaborate with her and to meet such enthusiastic students.
