Our Greek Lunch Club at a local Primary School is becoming more exciting each week! In our fourth session, the children built on their growing confidence with the Greek alphabet and explored the sounds of double vowels (ει, οι, αι, ου). Their progress in reading short dialogues was inspiring. From cheerful greetings like Καλημέρα! Με λένε Νίκο (Good morning! My name is Nick) to friendly exchanges such as Γεια σου! Με λένε Μαρία (Hi! My name is Maria). It was wonderful to see them not only recognizing the words but also acting out the conversations with enthusiasm and laughter.
The highlight of the session was our creative activity: designing Greek bookmarks! Each student chose a catchy phrase in Greek to decorate their bookmark, linking language learning with the joy of reading. Some of the favourite phrases included:
- Μου αρέσει να διαβάζω – I like to read
- Τα βιβλία είναι φίλοι μου – Books are my friends
- Κάθε λέξη μια περιπέτεια – Every word is an adventure
- Μικρά βιβλία, μεγάλα όνειρα – Small books, big dreams
The children proudly shared their creations, showing how Greek can be used in everyday life and how language connects with imagination. Their bookmarks were not just colourful pieces of art but also personal reminders of the fun and meaning behind learning Greek.
This week’s session captured the essence of our club: language, creativity, and confidence. By combining reading practice with hands-on activities, the children are discovering that Greek is not only a language to study but also a tool for self-expression and joy.
We are thrilled to see their progress and can’t wait for next week’s adventure, where we’ll continue exploring the beauty of Greek words and culture together.
